If you ever had a friend with whom you could laugh, cry and share your deepest secrets then you know how strong the friendship can be.

Friendship plays a crucial role and has a major impact on mental health and well-being. Sometimes we need an ear to talk to, a shoulder to rely upon while we thrive our way through depression and anxiety and we tend to turn to healthy friendships in such times since talking with family can be hard due to their stereotypical mindset. Studies have shown that "those who enjoy friendship over their teenage years have a lower rate of depression and anxiety late in life."

How does friendship affect mental health?

  1. Reduces loneliness and self-isolation - Social connections can provide a sense of belonging which creates a positive vibe.

  2. Emotional support – To support each other and help overcome situations as we see in F.R.I.E.N.D.S, the bond between Chandler and Joey or Monica and Rachel or even Rancho to Farhan in 3 Idiots.

  3. Makes us happier – Spending time with friends brings joy, which leads to the release of hormones like oxytocin.

While friendships can bring positivity and help you quit bad habits, they could also be toxic and lead you to feel anxious and drained and have low self-esteem.

Toxic friendships often involve manipulation and control tactics. This can leave individuals feeling emotionally manipulated, confused, and powerless. Dealing with constant upheaval can be emotionally draining and negatively impact mental well-being.

Making the right kind of friends is important. Here are some indicators of a good friend:

1. Trustworthy - A good friend is reliable and can be trusted.

2. Non-judgemental - A good friend might not accept all your choices but they will respect your decision without being judgemental.

3. Honest – They give genuine and honest feedback without manipulation.

Some indicators you are in a toxic friendship:

1. One-sided relationship- A toxic friend may be around when they need something and disappear when you need support.

2. Constant criticism – If your friend is critical, belittling or undermining, it's a sign of toxicity.

3. Drama and instability- Toxic friends may create drama or instability in your life leaving you emotionally drained.

Trust your instincts and pay attention to how you feel in the friendship. If you consistently feel drained, anxious, or unhappy-it may be worth evaluating the relationship.
